A devastating explosion in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has resulted in seven fatalities and left 20 individuals injured. The incident occurred in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, a historically marginalized enclave primarily inhabited by the Shiite Hazara community.
Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran confirmed the tragic event, stating, “An explosion occurred in a bus carrying civilian passengers in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of Kabul; unfortunately, seven of our compatriots were martyred, and 20 others were injured.” He shared this information on the social media platform X.
Security personnel swiftly responded to the scene, launching an investigation into the explosion. The incident has raised concerns about ongoing security challenges in the Afghan capital, particularly in areas with a history of violence.
The Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood has been a target of attacks in the past. In late October, an explosion at a sports club in the same area was claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group. In that incident, four people lost their lives, and seven sustained injuries. The authorities under the Taliban regime reported these casualties.
While the overall number of bomb blasts and suicide attacks has decreased significantly since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, effectively ending their insurgency and toppling the US-backed government, the security landscape remains complex. Various armed groups, including the regional chapter of the IS, continue to pose a threat, underscoring the ongoing challenges in establishing lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
