In a significant development, India has warmly welcomed Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia as new members of the BRICS alliance. This historic moment was marked by their participation in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by Russia, with senior Indian diplomat Dammu Ravi leading the Indian delegation.

The meeting, held in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, witnessed the active engagement of the new BRICS members alongside Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This expanded format reflects the growing influence and collaboration within the BRICS framework.

During the meeting, a joint statement reaffirmed the commitment of BRICS foreign ministers to strengthen cooperation across three pillars: politics and security, economy and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges. They emphasized multilateralism, upholding international law, and supporting the United Nations’ central role in maintaining global peace and security.

The ministers also addressed pressing global issues, including the need for comprehensive UN reform, combating terrorism in all forms, promoting climate action, and fostering a fair and inclusive multilateral trading system.

Russia, currently holding the BRICS presidency, has planned an extensive agenda of over 250 events throughout the year. The upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024 is expected to be a pivotal moment in advancing cooperation and addressing key challenges faced by member nations.

The inclusion of Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia in BRICS signals a strategic shift and a broader vision for collaboration among emerging economies, reflecting the evolving dynamics of global governance and cooperation.
