Brazil, currently holding the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), has taken a significant step by calling for an emergency UNSC meeting to address the escalating crisis in Israel. This move comes in the wake of the largest attack on Israel in years, prompting strong condemnation and expressions of solidarity from Brazil.
In an official statement issued by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, the nation voiced its deep concern over the recent attacks in Israel and expressed unwavering support for the Israeli people. Brazil reiterated its commitment to a “two-state solution,” emphasizing the importance of both Palestine and Israel coexisting peacefully within internationally recognized borders. The ministry emphasized the need to prevent violence, especially against civilians, and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation of the situation.
“The mere management of the conflict is not a viable alternative for addressing the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and the resumption of peace negotiations is urgent,” the Foreign Ministry added.
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene for this emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question,” according to an official statement released on Saturday. As Brazil leads the discussions, nations from around the world are weighing in on the ongoing conflict.
The United States unequivocally condemned the attacks carried out by “Hamas terrorists” against Israel. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated, “The United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians…We stand firmly with the Government and people of Israel and extend our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks.”
UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also voiced strong condemnation of the attacks, saying, “The UK unequivocally condemns the horrific attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians. The UK will always support Israel’s right to defend itself.”
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for an immediate ceasefire in Israel, stating, “Violence and rockets against innocent civilians must stop now. We stand in full solidarity with Israel and its right under international law to defend itself against terror.”
In response to a surprise rocket attack by Palestinian Hamas militants, Israel declared a “state of war” and initiated airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, ordered the military to take action to clear towns where Hamas militants had infiltrated, resulting in intense gunfights and casualties. The toll from the conflict includes at least 100 people killed, with dozens held as hostages.
As the international community grapples with this escalating crisis, Brazil’s call for an emergency UNSC meeting highlights the urgency of addressing the situation and seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Israel.
