Civil unrest has intensified in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) as protests originally sparked by economic grievances have transformed into a broader movement demanding rights and freedom. The situation has escalated with clashes between protesters and law enforcement, leading to casualties and a crackdown by authorities.
What began as demonstrations against issues like inflation, high taxation, and electricity shortages quickly evolved into a widespread movement across PoK. Protesters, including members of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee and local traders, have been vocal in demanding “azadi” (freedom) from perceived injustices and oppressive policies.
The protests have not been without violence, as clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in Muzaffarabad and other districts. These confrontations have resulted in injuries and, tragically, the loss of a police officer’s life. Mir emphasized the need for solidarity in demanding rights and urged citizens to participate in strikes and protests against police brutality and oppressive measures.
The unrest in PoK has drawn attention to longstanding issues and historical perspectives. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a recent statement, reiterated India’s claim over PoK, emphasizing its historical and legal ties to the region. He criticized past governments for not ensuring Pakistan vacated the area after Independence, contributing to the current state of affairs.
As protests continue and tensions remain high in PoK, the situation underscores broader themes of regional politics, rights advocacy, and historical grievances. The calls for “azadi” resonate not only with economic concerns but also with deeper aspirations for self-determination and freedom from perceived external control.
