Officials tracking weather patterns have reported that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, with the potential to intensify into a cyclone. This development could mark the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season.
The system is expected to initially move northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by May 24. There are concerns that this depression could evolve into a cyclone, prompting authorities to monitor the situation closely.
According to a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Roxy Mathew Koll, the ocean and atmospheric conditions in the south Bay of Bengal are favorable for cyclone formation. Warmer sea surface temperatures and the presence of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) are contributing factors.
However, the trajectory of the cyclone will significantly impact its effects. If it moves towards the Indian coast, it could support the onset of the monsoon. On the other hand, if it heads towards Myanmar, it could hinder the monsoon onset and have a negative impact.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings regarding potential heavy rainfall in North Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on May 24 and 25. Squally winds and rough sea conditions are also expected in the central and North Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution, with warnings against venturing into certain areas from May 23 onwards. Additionally, heat wave conditions are forecasted to persist in various parts of Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
