Australia Supports India's Bid for Permanent UN Security Council Membership

During her address at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong threw her weight behind India’s bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Wong’s endorsement of India’s candidacy echoed the sentiments of other world leaders who have called for reforms in the global organization.

Global Call for Security Council Reforms

In her speech, Minister Wong emphasized the need for reforms in the UNSC, advocating for greater permanent and non-permanent representation for regions around the world, including Africa, Latin America, and Asia. She specifically endorsed India and Japan as deserving candidates for permanent UNSC seats.

“For UNSC’s contribution to African Union-led operations, our commitment to peace and security is why Australia seeks a seat in the Security Council for the year 2029-30. And it is why we pursue Security Council reforms. We must ensure greater permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America, Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan. And we must demand more of permanent members, including constraints on the use of veto,” Minister Wong stated.

This call for reforms in the UNSC is not limited to Australia. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in his address at the UNGA session, also supported India’s and Brazil’s aspirations to attain permanent membership in a reformed Security Council. He emphasized that countries like India and Brazil should not be ignored in the current global landscape.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the G20 summit, previously expressed his support for India’s bid for permanent UNSC membership. He emphasized the need to expand the UNSC’s membership beyond the current five permanent members.

India’s Stance on Global Reforms

India has long advocated for reforms in global organizations, including the United Nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi, reiterated the need to align global systems with the present realities. He pointed out that the world has evolved significantly since the UN’s establishment, and it is essential for global structures to adapt to these changes.

PM Modi highlighted the transformation in various sectors such as transport, communication, health, and education. He stressed that these new realities should be reflected in a revamped global structure. India’s efforts to gain permanent UNSC membership align with its vision for a more inclusive and representative international order.

As the world continues to grapple with evolving geopolitical dynamics, the calls for reforms in the UNSC resonate as a push for a more equitable and responsive global governance system.
