Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated session on Monday as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh was suspended for the remaining duration of the Monsoon session by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar for his “unruly behavior.” Following the suspension, Singh lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of shying away from addressing the issue of Manipur violence during Parliament proceedings. Singh asserted that he would persist in his protest on this matter.
In a fiery address, Singh questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the violence in Manipur, emphasizing that the government was unwilling to engage in a discussion on the issue. Describing Modi as a “shameless coward and cruel ruler,” Singh demanded answers, stating, “If this House is not for speaking on Manipur violence-like incidents and if they cannot give a reply…we are ready to fight.” The Aam Aadmi Party also echoed Singh’s sentiments on Twitter, questioning the Prime Minister’s silence and vowing to continue their protest.
Singh’s suspension came as Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion, which was subsequently adopted by voice vote in the House. Despite his suspension, Singh persisted with his agitation, leading to the adjournment of Rajya Sabha.
At least 27 notices were submitted by leaders from various parties, urging for a discussion on the Manipur violence under Rule 267. However, the suspension of Singh and the logjam in Parliament has hampered the proceedings and sparked condemnation from opposition parties. The opposition accused the government of attempting to stifle their voices and demanded the revocation of Singh’s suspension. In response, they boycotted a meeting of floor leaders convened by Chairman Dhankhar to address the ongoing deadlock over the Manipur debate.
Both Houses of Parliament have faced disruptions since the commencement of the monsoon session, with unresolved issues exacerbating the stalemate. As the situation remains tense, political parties continue to vie for a platform to address the pressing matter of Manipur violence and demand accountability from the government.
