On January 26, 1972, while serving as a flight attendant on JAT Yugoslav Airlines’ Flight 367, tragedy struck as a suspected bomb brought down the plane over Czechoslovakia, now known as the Czech Republic. Despite the plane exploding mid-air and claiming the lives of all 27 other passengers and crew, Vesna Vulovic miraculously survived a 33,000-foot fall, marking the highest recorded fall without a parachute in aviation history.
As reported by the BBC, investigators later determined that Vesna Vulovic was trapped by a food cart in the tail section of the plane, which possibly cushioned her impact as the aircraft plummeted to the ground. Her screams for help were heard by Bruno Honke, a woodsman, who played a crucial role in her rescue. Despite sustaining severe injuries including a fractured skull, two crushed vertebrae, a broken pelvis, several ribs, and both legs, Vesna Vulovic’s strong will and determination prevailed.
“I was broken, and the doctors put me back together again,” she recounted to the New York Times in 2008, reflecting on her near-death experience and miraculous recovery. Despite being temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, Vesna Vulovic refused to succumb to despair. Her remarkable resilience led to a near-full recovery, allowing her to return to work for the airline in a desk job.
