A 37-year-old woman was seriously injured after being attacked by three wolves at the Thoiry zoo, located around 40 kilometers west of Paris. The incident occurred while the woman was staying in the zoo’s safari-style lodge, highlighting concerns about safety protocols and animal enclosures.
According to reports, the woman was bitten on the neck, calf, and back by the wolves. Initially, her life was deemed to be in danger, but later updates indicated that her injuries were no longer life-threatening. The police and prosecutors are investigating the circumstances leading to the attack.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman went for a jog early in the morning after spending the night with her family in the lodge. She reportedly crossed into the American reserve area on foot, a section typically accessible only by car. CEO of Wow Safari Thiory, Christelle Bercheny, mentioned that signs reminding visitors of safety rules are prominently displayed throughout the park.
“The behaviour of the animals in the reserves is that of animals in freedom or semi-liberty,” Bercheny explained, referring to the wolves’ reaction to encountering a human in their territory.
Authorities are looking into how the woman breached security measures, including a trench and an electric fence meant to keep the animals contained. First responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the wolves were moved away before being returned to their designated area.
The Thoiry Zoo, established in 1968, offers unique lodging experiences within animal enclosures, including the wolf zone where the incident took place. The lodges, priced between 220 and 760 euros per night, provide guests with an intimate view of arctic wolves from the comfort of their living spaces.
