The United States military launched a series of strikes on Houthi-controlled targets in Yemen, responding to attacks on American ships and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.
The operations, which began Monday, involved coordinated efforts by U.S. Navy ships and Air Force aircraft targeting Houthi-controlled coastal regions and specific locations in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), these strikes were part of broader defensive measures to ensure the safety of maritime operations in the region.
The U.S. military confirmed it intercepted and destroyed seven cruise missiles and unmanned aerial drones (UAVs) over the Red Sea during the operation. “There were no injuries or damage to U.S. personnel or equipment in either incident,” CENTCOM reported.
Eyewitnesses in Sanaa described multiple strikes across the city, including hits on the Defense Ministry and other Houthi-controlled facilities. Explosions were reported in various locations, intensifying tensions in the region.
Houthi Response
Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam condemned the strikes, labeling them “an American aggression” and accusing the U.S. of violating Yemen’s sovereignty. He further suggested that the operations demonstrate U.S. support for Israel amid ongoing regional conflicts.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for launching missiles targeting Israel, with the Israeli military confirming the interception of a projectile fired from Yemen.
Regional Context
The Houthis, who control significant portions of Yemen, have intensified missile and drone attacks in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. These actions have targeted Israel, shipping vessels in the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, escalating instability in the war-torn region.
U.S. Commitment to Regional Security
The Pentagon reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security in international waterways and protecting American interests in the Middle East. The strikes mark a significant escalation in U.S. military engagement with Houthi forces, signaling a determination to curb threats against maritime operations and allied nations.
As tensions persist, the situation underscores the growing complexity of conflicts in the region and the broader implications for international security.
