Ukraine’s armed forces have claimed the destruction of 17 out of 24 Russian drones deployed in an overnight attack, further escalating tensions in the region. Amidst the ongoing conflict, an oil refinery in the central Poltava region was hit, causing a temporary suspension of operations.
The Ukrainian General Staff provided a daily update, revealing that during the night, Russia “attacked Ukraine with 24 kamikaze drones of the Shahed-136/131 type, 17 of which were destroyed by Ukrainian air defense.” However, information concerning the consequences of these unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks is still being clarified.
In the central Poltava region, regional governor Dmytro Lunin reported the strike on an oil refinery. He said, “Tonight the Russians repeatedly attacked Poltava region. Our anti-aircraft defense worked well against enemy anti-aircraft missiles. Unfortunately, there is a hit at the oil refinery in Kremenchuk. A fire started, and all relevant services are on-site. The work of the plant is temporarily suspended.”
Sergiy Lysak, governor of the east-central Dnipropetrovsk region, also noted that the Nikopol district came under attack for a second consecutive night. Russian forces targeted Nikopol city and three other communities, resulting in damage to five private houses, two cars, and power lines. Fortunately, initial reports did not indicate any injuries. Lysak reported that Ukrainian armed forces “shot down two enemy UAVs over the area, turning them into scrap metal.”
The update from the Ukrainian General Staff revealed that on the previous day, Russia had launched an attack on Ukraine using 31 Iranian-made Shahed drones, with 28 of them being successfully destroyed.
These recent developments underscore the ongoing instability and tensions in the region, with Ukraine’s armed forces actively countering drone attacks as they seek to safeguard their territory and infrastructure. The situation continues to be a matter of international concern as efforts are made to de-escalate the conflict.
