A tragic incident has shaken the community of Bury, Greater Manchester, as a 27-year-old man, Joseph Higginson, passed away after consuming a single serving of butter chicken curry. Higginson, who had a pre-existing allergy to nuts and almonds, suffered a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis, leading to a cardiac arrest.
Despite being aware of his allergy and diligently checking food labels, Higginson consumed the curry, which was clearly labeled as containing almonds. His family administered an EpiPen to his thigh after he experienced the allergic reaction, but unfortunately, it did not prevent his condition from worsening. Despite their swift actions and the subsequent administration of adrenaline and CPR, Higginson tragically passed away seven days later at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
The incident has prompted reflection on the seriousness of food allergies, with Higginson’s family emphasizing the importance of taking allergies seriously and not taking them for granted. His sister, Emily Higginson, stressed that the severity of allergies can change over time, urging others to be vigilant and cautious.
Higginson, who had been diagnosed with allergies only months before his passing, was equipped with an EpiPen, a device designed to counter allergic reactions. However, despite receiving immediate medical attention, his condition rapidly deteriorated, ultimately resulting in his untimely death.
