A poignant story of love and loss has emerged from Taiwan, where a woman named Yu is planning a “ghost wedding” to honor her deceased boyfriend, who tragically died in a car accident earlier this month. Yu’s plans also include caring for his aging mother as a testament to her enduring commitment.
The accident occurred on July 15, when a four-car pile-up on a highway resulted in the deaths of two siblings, identified by their last name Hong. Yu, who was in the car with her boyfriend and his sister, attempted to rescue them from the wreckage but was only able to free a friend and two occupants of another vehicle involved in the collision.
Despite her injuries, Yu’s efforts to save her partner and his sister were in vain. She has since expressed profound regret over not being able to do more. According to Taiwanese news network ETtoday, Yu’s decision to hold a ghost wedding stems from the cultural practice in China where such ceremonies have been conducted for over 3,000 years. The ritual is intended to bring peace to those who have died without fulfilling their wishes or achieving certain milestones, such as marriage.
In a ghost marriage, the deceased is symbolically represented through photographs, used clothing, and other personal items, and the living participant performs the ceremonial rites on their behalf. This tradition is rooted in the belief that those who pass away without fulfilling their societal roles may not find peace in the afterlife.
Yu’s plan to hold the ghost wedding is not only a tribute to her late boyfriend but also a commitment to his family. She has vowed to take care of his aging mother, reflecting a deep sense of responsibility and love even in the face of her own grief.
