A small aircraft crashed into the terrace of a residential building near the city of Mönchengladbach on Saturday around midday, resulting in the deaths of two people, police confirmed.
The incident occurred in Korschenbroich, a town close to the Dutch border. The plane struck the terrace of the house, causing a fire that inflicted extensive damage to the property. Authorities confirmed that among the two fatalities was the plane’s pilot, a 71-year-old woman, according to the German news agency dpa. Investigators are currently working to identify the second victim.
Three individuals were registered as residents of the affected building; however, two were not present at the time of the crash and later contacted police to confirm their safety.
The pilot had departed from Alkersleben, near Erfurt in eastern Germany, earlier on Saturday morning, with plans to land at Mönchengladbach Airport, located less than four kilometers from the crash site. Prior to the accident, she reported experiencing technical difficulties with the aircraft.
Emergency responders are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash while assessing the damage to the house and surrounding area. Further updates are expected as officials gather more information.
