Russia has thrown its weight behind India’s quest for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), affirming its support for New Delhi’s aspirations. Sergei Lavrov, in discussions with Indian counterpart S Jaishankar during the latter’s five-day visit to Russia, expressed backing for India’s bid for a permanent membership at the UNSC.
The UNSC, composed of five permanent members and ten non-permanent members, has long been a focal point for India’s advocacy for UN reforms, aligning the organization with the evolving global landscape. The existing permanent members are the UK, China, Russia, the US, and France.
Lavrov’s endorsement of India’s candidacy underscores the growing recognition of India’s diplomatic influence on the world stage. Lavrov particularly commended India’s adept handling of contentious issues during the G20 Summit held earlier in New Delhi, lauding it as a “true triumph” of India’s foreign policy.
