In a groundbreaking development, Russia and China are reportedly contemplating a joint project to establish a nuclear reactor on the Moon within the next decade, according to statements attributed to the head of Russia’s State Space Corporation, Roscosmos.
Yury Borisov, CEO of Roscosmos, highlighted the seriousness of the endeavor, emphasizing that the mission would necessitate automation and the utilization of advanced technological solutions. Borisov indicated that preparations for such an ambitious undertaking are already well underway.
“Today, we are seriously considering a project to deliver to the Moon and mount a power reactor there jointly with our Chinese partners somewhere between 2033 and 2035,” stated Borisov during the World Youth Festival held at the Sirius federal territory, as reported by the state-run Tass news agency on Tuesday.
This revelation comes following the signing of a memorandum of mutual understanding between Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) in March 2021. The memorandum, representing collaboration at the governmental level, focuses on the establishment of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). Under this initiative, China is slated to execute three lunar missions: Chang’e 6, Chang’e 7, and Chang’e 8. These missions aim to test crucial technologies essential for constructing a robotic research base capable of remote operation.
According to TASS, the inaugural lunar mission is scheduled for 2026, with the overarching project anticipated to conclude by 2028.
