Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan recently held a significant meeting with Saudi Arabia’s de-facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca. The meeting, which took place on April 7, focused on various regional issues, with a particular emphasis on the Kashmir matter, according to a joint statement released after the discussions.
The joint statement highlighted the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to address their “outstanding issues,” particularly emphasizing the need for a resolution to the Kashmir dispute. Both leaders underscored the significance of strengthening fraternal relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia while exploring opportunities for enhanced collaboration across different sectors.
“The two sides stressed the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve the outstanding issues between the two countries, especially the Jammu and Kashmir dispute to ensure peace and stability in the region,” the statement emphasized.
It’s worth noting that India has consistently maintained that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter solely between India and Pakistan, rejecting any mediation or intervention by third parties.
The relations between India and Pakistan have faced challenges, notably after India’s decision to abrogate Article 370 of its Constitution in August 2019, revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and restructuring the state into two Union territories. This move led to a strong reaction from Pakistan, including downgrading diplomatic ties and expelling the Indian envoy. India has reiterated its stance that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.
Despite these tensions, India has expressed its desire for normal neighborly relations with Pakistan in an environment free of terrorism, hostility, and violence.
On the economic front, the joint statement emphasized Saudi Arabia’s supportive role in Pakistan’s economy and the mutual desire to strengthen trade and investment ties. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to expediting a $5 billion investment package that had been previously discussed.
As a significant gesture, Shehbaz Sharif invited Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to undertake an official visit to Pakistan, which was accepted by the Saudi Crown Prince.
