
A disturbing incident unfolded on a Brooklyn subway train during Thursday evening rush hour, resulting in a serious injury when a passenger wrestled a gun from another rider and fired shots. The altercation took place as the train stopped at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in Downtown Brooklyn.
According to reports from the New York Times (NYT), the confrontation began when a 32-year-old man was confronted in an “aggressive and provocative” manner by a 36-year-old passenger who boarded the train at the Nostrand Avenue station. The situation quickly escalated into a physical fight, with the 36-year-old brandishing a razor blade or knife before ultimately pulling out a gun.
Eyewitnesses described a tense and chaotic scene, with one woman pleading for calm as the altercation intensified. The situation took a dangerous turn as the 36-year-old physically attacked the other man, prompting him to defend himself and manage to disarm the aggressor.
During the struggle, the 32-year-old seized control of the gun and fired multiple shots, causing panic among passengers who rushed out of the train at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station. Police officers swiftly responded to the gunshots and apprehended the shooter before he could exit the train.
The victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery. As per Chief of Transit Michael Kemper, the victim remains in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet charged the 32-year-old shooter, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether his actions will be considered self-defense.
