North Korea has unveiled a new type of “suicide drone,” with leader Kim Jong Un personally overseeing a performance test of the weaponry, according to state media reports on Monday. The drones, which are explosive-carrying unmanned aerial vehicles designed to crash deliberately into enemy targets, essentially function as guided missiles.
Kim Jong Un, sporting a cream baker boy hat, was shown in state media images smiling as he watched the drones in action through high-powered binoculars. The drones successfully destroyed their targets, demonstrating their capability, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The North Korean leader emphasized the necessity of further developing and producing more of these suicide drones, as well as expanding the country’s arsenal to include strategic reconnaissance and multi-purpose attack drones. According to KCNA, these drones will be deployed across various striking ranges, capable of targeting enemies both on land and at sea.
All drones tested on August 24 reportedly “correctly identified and destroyed the designated targets after flying along different preset routes,” signaling a successful performance. Additionally, Kim Jong Un revealed plans to integrate artificial intelligence technology into the ongoing development of North Korea’s drone fleet, suggesting a strategic push towards more advanced military capabilities.
This development has raised concerns among experts, with some speculating that the technology used in these drones could have been sourced from Russia. The introduction of suicide drones represents a significant enhancement in North Korea’s unmanned aerial capabilities, further intensifying regional security tensions.
