The Indian Navy recently took swift action in response to a distress call from a Bangladeshi-flagged cargo vessel that was hijacked off the Somali coast during its journey from Mozambique to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to a statement released by the Indian Navy on Friday, their offshore Long Range Maritime Patrol (LRMP) vessel and a warship were deployed to address the situation. The LRMP P-81 was immediately dispatched upon receiving intimation on March 12. Upon locating the hijacked merchant vessel, MV Abdullah, the Navy attempted to establish communication to check on the status of the crew members but received no response from the ship.
The safety of the crew, who were held hostage by armed pirates, was a top priority for the Indian Navy. The warship continued to monitor the situation closely until the hijacked vessel arrived in the territorial waters of Somalia. The successful response to this piracy attack highlights the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the region.
This incident is part of a broader trend of piracy threats in the Indian Ocean, with the Indian Navy recently assisting several merchant vessels following piracy attacks. In a separate incident earlier this month, the Navy thwarted a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel and rescued crew members of various nationalities.
