India, US Close to Finalizing Limited Trade Pact

India is progressing toward a “mini trade deal” with the United States, as officials race to finalize terms before August 1, the deadline for extended tariff relaxations. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that India will prioritize its economic sovereignty while ensuring mutual benefits. The deal is expected to boost industries such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductor manufacturing, while positioning India as a stronger global trade partner.

Nationwide Bandh Grips the Nation as Workers Demand Reform Reversal

A large-scale Bharat Bandh led to service disruptions across India as over 25 crore workers walked out in protest. The strike, organized by central trade unions and farmers’ groups, was staged against labor code changes, PSU privatization, and rising inflation. States like Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Delhi experienced heavy impacts on banking, transportation, and postal operations, though educational institutions and hospitals mostly continued without interruption.

Gujarat’s banking services came to a virtual standstill as 20,000 employees participated in the strike. More than 3,500 branches remained closed, freezing major financial activities such as cheque processing, cash services, and customer support. Despite the shutdown, ATM networks were mostly unaffected, providing some financial access to the public during the one-day industrial action.

Social Media Censorship Row as Reuters Accounts Temporarily Blocked

A digital media controversy unfolded after several Reuters India social accounts were found to be blocked on July 3 on X (formerly Twitter). The Indian government allegedly invoked Section 69A of the IT Act, citing national interest. The accounts were restored on July 5 after criticism from media and rights groups. Interestingly, the government later denied issuing any new directive, sparking debate on transparency in internet governance and freedom of the press.

Fare Hike Announced by Indian Railways to Meet Operational Costs

Beginning July 1, passengers across India faced a minor increase in train ticket fares. The revision affects both AC and sleeper categories, and is part of the Indian Railways’ effort to balance rising fuel prices and expanding infrastructure projects. Though the adjustment is small, travelers are encouraged to check updated rates while booking, especially for long-distance routes.
