A spokesperson for Rishi Sunak described the visit as a “courtesy drop-in,” as Obama was in London for work associated with his Foundation, the Obama Foundation. The informal meeting included discussions on international affairs and the role of AI in shaping future developments.
The Downing Street spokesperson confirmed the meeting, stating, “The Prime Minister welcomed Barack Obama to No. 10 this afternoon for an informal meeting, as part of the former president’s visit to London with the Obama Foundation. During his visit, Obama was seen cheerfully entering 10 Downing Street, where the discussions took place in the Downing Street study. The meeting marked the first time that Rishi Sunak, the British Indian leader, met with Barack Obama, who served as US President from 2009 to 2017.
Obama’s foundation, based in Chicago, focuses on inspiring, empowering, and connecting people to bring about positive change globally. Following the informal talks, Obama left Downing Street accompanied by the US ambassador to the UK, Jane Hartley.
