Former Google India Employee Shares Struggles with Low Salary in Canada: ‘Barely Surviving’

An Indian expatriate who previously worked at Google India has shared his frustration with the challenges of transitioning to the Canadian job market. In a viral video interview with Piyush Monga, a digital creator behind the popular Instagram page ‘Salary Scale,’ the former Google employee revealed that he is now working as a Process Inventory Associate in Canada, earning just $17,500 annually.

Despite having over three years of work experience at Google in India, the professional expressed dissatisfaction with how his background is being valued by Canadian employers. He stated that he has been downplaying his Indian work experience on his resume, as recruiters tend to overlook or discount it. “Ever since I moved here, I’ve been reducing my experience on my resume because recruiters aren’t counting my work in India. It just doesn’t make any sense,” he explained in the interview.

The Indian expat, currently seeking better job opportunities, claimed that Canadian recruiters appear to prioritize hiring local candidates over Indian applicants. This sentiment echoes the broader challenges that many immigrants face when trying to integrate into foreign labor markets, where local experience is often deemed more relevant.

Shifting India-Canada Relations

The video comes at a time when relations between India and Canada are under strain. Public opinion in Canada regarding India has taken a hit over the past year, especially following the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar and accusations of foreign interference. A survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute showed an 11-point drop in positive views of India since March 2023. Currently, only 33% of Canadians view India favorably, compared to 54% who do not.

The decline in Canada’s perception of India marks a significant shift from 2019, when India enjoyed a 56% positive rating. Another country facing similar challenges in public opinion is China, with 79% of Canadians holding negative views amid similar allegations of foreign interference.

The Immigrant Struggle

The experience of this former Google employee highlights the difficulties many immigrants face when trying to establish themselves in a foreign job market. Even with strong qualifications and professional backgrounds, the transition can be marked by lower salaries and undervalued experience, leaving many immigrants feeling underutilized and frustrated.
