An Atlas Air Boeing cargo plane encountered a harrowing situation as it was compelled to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport due to an engine malfunction shortly after departure. The incident occurred late on Thursday, prompting an immediate response from the crew, who followed standard procedures to safely return the aircraft to MIA.
Atlas Air released a statement confirming the emergency landing and ensuring a thorough inspection to determine the cause of the engine malfunction. Unverified videos circulating on social media platform X depicted flames shooting out of the left wing of the Boeing cargo plane during its flight. The authenticity of the videos could not be immediately verified by Reuters.
The aircraft involved in the incident was identified as a Boeing 747-8, according to Flightaware data. Powered by four General Electric GEnx engines, the Boeing 747-8 faced the engine malfunction that led to the emergency landing. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded promptly to the situation, and fortunately, no injuries were reported, as confirmed by the airport to Reuters.
Boeing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and General Electric have not yet responded to requests for comment on the incident. Boeing is currently grappling with a crisis following an emergency landing of an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 airliner on January 5, where part of its fuselage broke off shortly after take-off from Portland, Oregon. In response, the FAA temporarily grounded 171 aircraft for safety checks.
