A mild earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan’s Faisalabad division on Tuesday evening, adding to a string of recent seismic events across the country. The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) reported that the tremor was felt around 7:30 pm, with its epicenter near Jhang Tehsil in Punjab province.
The quake originated at a depth of 111 kilometers, at coordinates 31.31°N and 72.52°E. While the tremor caused minor panic among residents, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
This is the third earthquake to hit Pakistan in May alone, underlining the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity. On May 12, a stronger earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitude rattled Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, with tremors felt in surrounding areas.
Seismic Vulnerability of Pakistan
Pakistan is located at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Several provinces—including Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan—lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab, Sindh, and parts of Pakistan-administered Kashmir sit atop the Indian plate.
These geological fault lines, such as the Main Central Thrust, which was identified as the source of Tuesday’s tremor, are prone to regular seismic activity. According to Dr. O.P. Mishra, Director of the NCS, the Main Central Thrust is a major geological fault that frequently generates tremors in the region.
In recent weeks, a quake was also recorded near Pir Jongal in Punjab, intensifying concerns over the increasing seismic frequency, particularly amid ongoing political and regional tensions with neighboring India.
Authorities have advised residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to follow emergency protocols in the event of future quakes.
