In a disturbing breach of privacy, a woman in China has discovered that her breast augmentation surgery was secretly recorded and shared on social media without her consent. The incident has sparked outrage and legal action against the hospital involved.
In January, Gao, a resident of the central Chinese province of Henan, underwent breast enlargement surgery at a specialized cosmetic surgery hospital. Five months later, she was shocked to find a video of herself circulating on China’s TikTok platform. The footage depicted her in a heavily bandaged state and seemingly under anesthesia following the procedure.
According to the South China Morning Post, Gao initially recognized herself in the video and was horrified to learn that she had been secretly filmed. The video, which also included footage of other patients, caused her significant distress. Gao has since demanded that the hospital reveal the identity of the person responsible for recording the video and remove it from the internet. She has also sought compensation for the violation of her privacy and a public apology from the hospital.
The hospital, however, has refused to issue an apology, claiming that the footage was recorded and uploaded by a “third party.” The facility has stated that tracking down the individual responsible is impossible, as security footage is deleted after three months. They have promised to cooperate with social media platforms to remove the video if it reappears online.
Gao has expressed skepticism about the hospital’s claims, arguing that it would be extremely unlikely for an outsider to access the operating room, which is a highly secure and private area. She pointed out that the video clearly shows medical staff present, which suggests that the footage was taken by someone within the hospital.
The hospital later revised its statement, alleging that the individual who recorded the video had left the facility and destroyed all contact information. Despite these claims, the controversy has intensified, leading Gao to file a lawsuit against the hospital for its role in the privacy breach.
