“Bangladesh Floods Claim 54 Lives; Unicef Warns 2 Million Children at Risk”

Devastating Floods in Bangladesh: 54 Dead, 2 Million Children at Risk, Unicef Warns

Heavy rains and swollen rivers have caused unprecedented flooding in eastern Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of 54 people and leaving over two million children at risk, according to reports from the disaster management ministry and Unicef.

The severe floods have impacted 11 districts in eastern Bangladesh, including Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, and Habiganj. Among the deceased, the highest toll of 19 fatalities was reported from Feni district. The victims include six women and seven children. The floods have affected over five million people, with more than a million families displaced across 64 sub-districts.

Unicef has highlighted that over two million children are currently at risk due to the floods, which have been described as the worst in eastern Bangladesh in 34 years. The organization warns that many children and families are stranded without essential supplies, and emergency relief efforts are hampered by difficult access to some areas. The monsoon season is expected to exacerbate the situation further.

Unicef is providing critical supplies such as water purification tablets and oral rehydration salts, but additional funds are urgently needed. The organization has called for up to $35.3 million to support life-saving interventions for children and pregnant women.

In response to the crisis, Bangladesh’s interim government is coordinating relief efforts with the army, navy, coast guard, and various NGOs. The government has launched a fund collection drive, with contributions from the Bangladesh Army and other sectors. However, the situation remains dire as the country also faces political instability and law and order issues.

Emma Brigham, Deputy Representative of Unicef Bangladesh, emphasized the tragic impact of the floods on children, who have lost homes, schools, and loved ones. “These floods are a stark reminder of the relentless effects of extreme weather and climate change on vulnerable populations,” she stated.
