In a heartwarming announcement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that he proposed to his partner, Jodie Haydon, on Valentine’s Day, making history as the first Australian prime minister to get engaged while in office. Albanese shared the joyful news via Instagram, where he posted a picture of himself and Haydon, announcing her acceptance of his proposal.
Albanese, who has been in a relationship with Haydon, a financial services professional, for three years, recounted the romantic moment of his proposal, which took place on the balcony of his official residence, known as the Lodge. Following the proposal, the couple celebrated with a romantic dinner at an Italian restaurant.
The Prime Minister took an active role in planning the proposal, arranging both the date and the location. He even had a hand in designing Haydon’s diamond ring, adding a personal touch to the special occasion. However, Albanese expressed uncertainty regarding the timing of their wedding, acknowledging that it might coincide with Australia’s next scheduled election, potentially occurring anytime between August and May next year.
“We’ll now have those discussions between us, which I think people would understand, and sort out those details, but we just want to live in the moment at this point,” Albanese stated during a brief news conference outside the Lodge.
Expressing his joy, Albanese remarked, “It is such a joy to be able to share this news with people, and it’s wonderful I found a partner who I want to spend the rest of my life with. Last night was a very great occasion here at the Lodge. We couldn’t be more happy.”
Haydon also expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of congratulatory messages from friends, family, and even strangers. “It’s just been overwhelming, but beautiful,” she remarked to the Associated Press.
Albanese’s political opponent, opposition leader Peter Dutton, congratulated the Prime Minister on his engagement, jokingly alluding to their differing views on Australia’s monarchy. While Dutton supports retaining King Charles III as Australia’s head of state, Albanese advocates for Australia to become a republic with an Australian head of state.
“We look forward to our version of the royal wedding sometime in the near future. I’ll be there, throwing roses out in front of you, Prime Minister. Whatever it takes to get an invite to the gala wedding,” Dutton quipped, as reported by the Associated Press.
