Severe storms ravaged parts of Texas, leaving a trail of death and destruction as millions were left without power and communities struggled to cope with the aftermath. A powerful tornado claimed the life of a teenager working at a construction site, adding to the toll of 24 deaths across seven states from recent deadly storms.
The storms on Tuesday, which caused power outages for over a million customers at one point, were part of a series of deadly weather events that struck over the long Memorial Day weekend. These storms, including tornadoes, wreaked havoc across the U.S., with Houston facing flooding and damage just weeks after being hit by a derecho storm that claimed eight lives and caused extensive power outages.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo expressed concern about the repeated impact of severe weather on the region, stating that many are still recovering from previous storms. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell is actively assessing the tornado damage as part of the Biden administration’s response to the crisis.
The ongoing threat of heavy rains, flash flooding, and severe weather persists across Oklahoma and Texas, with thunderstorms predicted to move through multiple states in the coming days. The consequences of these storms were felt beyond just power outages, as the Dallas area extended polling hours due to outages affecting polling places during state runoff elections.
In response to the storm damage, cities like Dallas opened respite centers for residents seeking shelter and assistance. The severe winds, reaching up to 80 mph, caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, including several aircraft at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The tragic loss of life occurred in Magnolia, a Houston suburb, where a 16-year-old construction worker lost his life when a home under construction collapsed during a thunderstorm. The National Weather Service warns that the weather pattern remains “very active and highly impactful,” indicating continued challenges for affected regions.
