A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of New Mexico has discovered microplastics in every human testicle examined, raising concerns about their potential impact on male fertility. Published in the journal Toxicological Sciences, the study analyzed tissue samples from both humans and canines, revealing the presence of microplastics in all cases.

Led by Dr. Xiaozhong “John” Yu, MD, PhD, MPH, a professor in the UNM College of Nursing, the research team detected 12 types of microplastics in 47 canine and 23 human testes. Polyethylene, commonly used in plastic bags and bottles, emerged as the most prevalent type, alongside polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

“Our study revealed the presence of microplastics in all human and canine testes,” stated Dr. Yu, highlighting the potential consequences for male fertility. The discovery comes amidst growing concerns about plastic pollution and its impact on human health.

The study’s findings challenge previous assumptions about the penetration of microplastics into the reproductive system. Dr. Yu expressed initial surprise at the results, noting the pervasiveness of microplastics in our environment and their ability to reach even sensitive areas of the human body.

“This research adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that microplastics are pervasive in our environment, reaching even the most sensitive areas of the human body,” Dr. Yu emphasized. While further research is needed to fully understand the effects of microplastics on male fertility, this discovery underscores a significant public health concern.
