Indonesia’s Mount Ibu, located on the isolated island of Halmahera, erupted in a spectacular display, sending ash soaring 4 kilometers into the sky and casting streaks of purple lightning around its crater. The eruption, which occurred on Saturday evening, led to the immediate evacuation of seven neighboring villages as authorities rushed to ensure the safety of residents.
The eruption of Mount Ibu was accompanied by dramatic visuals as a grey ash cloud billowed into the sky, illuminated by flashes of purple lightning. Indonesia’s volcanology agency provided information and photographs of the eruption, highlighting the intensity of the volcanic activity.
A joint effort involving police, military, and search and rescue teams was swiftly mobilized to evacuate residents from nearby communities. The disaster agency shared photos on social media showing authorities assisting elderly individuals and transporting others in pick-up trucks, providing emergency shelter in tents overnight. While the exact number of evacuees was not disclosed, authorities recommended clearing a radius of seven kilometers (4.35 miles) around the volcano as a precautionary measure.
The heightened volcanic activity at Mount Ibu prompted Indonesia’s volcanology agency to raise the alert level to its highest status on Thursday, following multiple eruptions earlier in the month. This eruption adds to a series of volcanic events across Indonesia, a country known for its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which boasts 127 active volcanoes.
Recent volcanic activities have had severe consequences, such as flash floods and cold lava flows from Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province, which resulted in the tragic loss of more than 60 lives due to torrential rain on May 11. Additionally, the Ruang volcano in North Sulawesi has also erupted, emitting incandescent lava and prompting the evacuation of over 12,000 people from a nearby island.
