In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia launched a missile attack targeting critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Lviv region, causing substantial damage and igniting a fire at a power generation facility. According to reports, Russia fired 50 missiles and deployed 20 drones overnight in this aggressive assault on Wednesday.
The attack specifically targeted the Stryi district, where vital energy infrastructure was situated, and a power generation facility in the Chervonohrad district, both located in western Ukraine. The Lviv governor confirmed these strikes in a statement on the Telegram messaging app, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The missile strike resulted in a fire at the power generation facility, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly to the scene. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties from the attack on Lviv region. However, the impact on Ukraine’s energy sector was significant, with DTEK, the country’s largest private electricity company, reporting serious equipment damage at three thermal power plants.
“DTEK” stated on Telegram that “The equipment is seriously damaged,” and power engineers are diligently working to address the aftermath of the attack. This assault underscores the devastating consequences of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has already inflicted widespread destruction and humanitarian crises across the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack, noting that Russia employed over 50 missiles and numerous drones in the assault on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
