Amid escalating tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, Dutch authorities took decisive action at the University of Amsterdam, arresting over 120 individuals and utilizing bulldozers to dismantle pro-Palestine encampments.
The protest, mirroring similar demonstrations originating from US universities against Israel’s actions in Gaza, led to what police described as a “very unsafe situation.” Authorities resorted to batons as clashes erupted after protesters barricaded roads leading to the university.
In an official statement, police expressed concern over the safety hazards posed by the protest’s setup, which hindered emergency services’ access and could potentially endanger activists in case of a disaster.
Violence escalated further on Monday when counter-protesters, wielding flares, clashed with the main demonstration. Stones and fireworks were reportedly hurled at officers during the dispersal of the protest.
The demonstrators’ primary demand has been for the University of Amsterdam to sever ties with Israel, citing the ongoing military offensive in Gaza.
The conflict in Gaza was triggered by an attack on Israeli cities by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The retaliatory actions by Israel have sparked global outrage and led to widespread protests, including at educational institutions.
Student protests against Israel’s offensive began in the US and have now spread to Europe, with gatherings at numerous university campuses demanding an end to partnerships with Israeli institutions.
