The United States has announced a sweeping package of sanctions targeting nearly 300 entities in Russia, China, and other countries accused of supporting President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The move, announced by the US Treasury Department, aims to cripple Russia’s military and industrial capabilities while punishing companies in China and elsewhere that facilitate Moscow’s acquisition of weapons for the war in Ukraine.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the consequences for companies providing material support to Russia’s war efforts, stating that these actions will disrupt and degrade Russia’s military industrial base and the networks aiding its supply chains.
This wave of sanctions follows President Joe Biden’s signing of a bill to provide new funding for Ukraine, providing military, economic, and humanitarian support as Kyiv’s military confronts Russian advances.
Yellen highlighted the combined efforts of supporting Ukraine and targeting Russia’s military capacity, stating that these actions are giving Ukraine a critical advantage on the battlefield.
As part of the measures, the State Department has blacklisted additional individuals and companies involved in Moscow’s energy, mining, and metals sectors. The sanctions also extend to individuals connected to the death of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny, who died in custody in February.
The targets of these sanctions include entities accused of enabling Russia to acquire vital technology and equipment from abroad, with a focus on countries like China that have faced pressure from Washington for supporting Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.
The Treasury’s statement expressed particular concern about entities in China and other third countries that provide critical inputs to Russia’s military-industrial base, enabling Russia to continue its war against Ukraine and posing a significant threat to international security.
Apart from China, non-Russian entities targeted in the sanctions hail from countries such as Azerbaijan, Belgium, Slovakia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These companies are accused of enabling Russia’s acquisition of essential technology and equipment, contributing to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
