Japanese Town Installs Barrier to Block Mount Fuji View Due to Misbehaving Tourists

In response to increasing incidents of misbehavior by tourists, authorities in a Japanese town have decided to install a massive black barrier to obstruct the view of Mount Fuji, a renowned natural landmark and a popular tourist attraction.

The construction of the mesh net, measuring 2.5 meters (8 feet) high and spanning 20 meters in length (equivalent to the size of a cricket pitch), is set to commence as early as next week, according to an official from Fujikawaguchiko town who spoke on Friday.

The decision to install such a barrier reflects the frustration of local authorities with the behavior of some foreign tourists who have been disregarding rules, littering, and ignoring traffic regulations in the area, as stated by the official in an interview with AFP.

This move comes amidst a broader trend of addressing issues related to overtourism in Japan, with previous actions including restrictions imposed by residents of Kyoto’s geisha district on access to small private alleys earlier this year.

Japan has witnessed a surge in tourist numbers, exceeding three million monthly visitors in March for the first time ever. Mount Fuji, being Japan’s tallest peak, attracts numerous visitors, and the viewpoint in Fujikawaguchiko, where the barrier will be installed, is particularly popular due to its backdrop featuring the volcano and a Lawson convenience store, a common sight across Japan.

The town official mentioned that this specific spot has gained popularity on social media as a quintessentially Japanese photo location, leading to an influx of mostly non-Japanese tourists crowding the area near the Lawson shop.

Despite efforts such as traffic signs and warnings from security guards, the situation did not improve, prompting the town to resort to the drastic measure of erecting a large screen. The barrier is also intended to protect a nearby dental clinic from unauthorized parking and instances of tourists climbing onto its roof for photo opportunities.

The official expressed regret over the necessity of installing the barrier and mentioned that it will be maintained until the situation improves. This action reflects broader concerns about managing tourism sustainably, a challenge faced not only in Japan but also in other popular destinations worldwide grappling with the impacts of mass tourism.
