An 18-year-old woman in China, known as Xiaoyu, has been hospitalized after displaying obsessive behavior towards her boyfriend, leading doctors to suspect borderline personality disorder.
Xiaoyu’s fixation on her boyfriend began during her first year of university, escalating to a point where she demanded constant communication and updates on his whereabouts. This behavior strained their relationship, causing her boyfriend to feel overwhelmed.
The situation reached a critical point when Xiaoyu made over 100 calls to her boyfriend in a single day without receiving a response. Distraught, she began damaging household items and even threatened self-harm. Concerned for her safety, her boyfriend contacted the police.
Officers arrived just as Xiaoyu threatened to jump from a balcony. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a condition often associated with extreme emotional instability and impulsive behavior.
Although “love brain” is not a medical term, it colloquially describes obsessive behavior in romantic relationships. Dr. Du Na, a doctor involved in Xiaoyu’s treatment, noted that borderline personality disorder can co-occur with conditions like anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, possibly stemming from unhealthy childhood attachments.
Dr. Du emphasized that while mild cases might benefit from emotional management techniques, severe cases like Xiaoyu’s require medical intervention. The incident highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health issues, especially in cases of extreme emotional distress.
