Australia has announced significant changes to its visa regulations for international students, with new rules coming into effect on March 23. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas will be replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, aligning Australia’s immigration policies with those of Canada and the UK.
The decision, made public on December 11, will impact visa applications submitted after March 23, 2024. One notable change is the increase in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score required for eligibility. For example, a score of 6.5 is now necessary for a Temporary Graduate visa, up from the previous requirement of 6.0. Similarly, the IELTS score for a student visa has been raised from 5.5 to 6.0.
The validity window for the Temporary Graduate visa (TGV) English language test has been reduced from three years to one year. This means that TGV applicants must provide proof of completing an English language test within one year before applying for the visa.
In addition to these changes, a new genuine student test will be implemented for all international students. This test aims to assess the student’s genuine intention to study in Australia, considering factors such as course progression, immigration history, compliance with visa conditions, and other relevant matters.
Moreover, the financial requirements for international students seeking a student visa have been increased, with applicants now required to show evidence of savings totaling $24,505.
According to government data, Australia hosted 100,009 Indian students in 2022, demonstrating the country’s popularity as a study destination. The number of Indian students traveling to Australia has varied over the years, with 33,629 students in 2020, 8,950 in 2021, and 73,808 in 2019 on student visas.
These regulatory changes reflect Australia’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its education system while ensuring that international students have genuine intentions to study in the country. The new visa rules aim to enhance the quality and authenticity of the student population in Australia’s universities and institutions.
