A passenger aboard a Mexico-bound WestJet flight has alleged that she was ejected from the plane before takeoff due to her frequent use of the restroom. Joanna Chiu, identified as the passenger, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share her ordeal, stating that her “upset stomach” necessitated several visits to the bathroom, resulting in her removal from the flight. The incident occurred earlier this month.
Chiu’s tweets recount the events, with one post stating, “Just got kicked off a @WestJet flight from Mexico because I had an upset stomach and was going to the washroom too much before takeoff.” She expressed dissatisfaction with the airline’s handling of the situation, highlighting the lack of accommodation or alternative arrangements following her removal from the flight.
Further elaborating on her experience, Chiu claimed that after leaving money behind on the plane and seeking assistance, the airline declined to cover her taxi fare to a nearby hotel. She described an emotionally charged interaction with a WestJet supervisor at the airport, which left her in tears. Chiu also alleged that the airline attempted to intimidate her by involving security personnel.
Despite her efforts to address the situation through various channels, including filming her exchange with security, Chiu reported encountering resistance from WestJet staff. She noted that she only received assistance from the airline after resorting to social media to publicly share her experience.
In response to Chiu’s tweets, WestJet expressed regret for the inconvenience and offered assistance, requesting her contact information for further follow-up.
The incident sparked outrage among other social media users, with many expressing disbelief at the airline’s actions and criticizing its treatment of Chiu. Some questioned the necessity of removing a passenger for using the restroom, while others defended the crew’s decision, citing safety concerns.
Chiu’s account of her experience sheds light on the challenges passengers may face when seeking assistance from airlines in unforeseen circumstances, underscoring the importance of effective communication and customer support in such situations.
