A tragic incident unfolded in Russia’s northern Karelia region as an Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the emergencies ministry crashed into Lake Onega. The crash, which occurred during a training flight, involved three crew members on board. According to the ministry’s statement on the Telegram messaging app, the helicopter was piloted by an experienced crew with a significant number of flight hours. The aircraft disappeared from radar late on Sunday, prompting concerns and triggering search efforts.

The wreckage of the helicopter was discovered approximately 11 km (6.8 miles) from the shore of Lake Onega, Europe’s second-largest lake. The crash site is at a depth of 50 meters (164 feet), posing additional challenges to recovery efforts. Divers and a remote-controlled underwater vehicle have been deployed to facilitate the search and assess the condition of the helicopter.
