The 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), released by Transparency International, has unveiled a list of the world’s most and least corrupt countries, shedding light on the global state of public sector corruption. The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories on a scale from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), revealed some significant trends in the ongoing battle against corruption.
Least Corrupt Countries:
Denmark secured the top spot for the sixth consecutive year, boasting a score of 90, attributed to its “well-functioning justice systems.” Finland (87) and New Zealand (85) followed closely, maintaining their positions in the list of least corrupt nations. Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg rounded up the top ten least corrupted countries in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index.
Most Corrupt Countries:
At the other end of the spectrum, Somalia emerged as the most corrupt country with a score of 11, joined by Venezuela (13), Syria (13), South Sudan (13), and Yemen (16) at the bottom of the index. The report highlighted that these countries are all grappling with protracted crises, primarily armed conflicts. North Korea also found itself at the bottom with a score of 172.
India’s Position:
India, with a score of 39, ranked 93 in the corruption perceptions index for 2023. While the overall score remained largely unchanged, it marked a slight dip from its 2022 score of 40 when it held the 85th position. The report noted that Pakistan, with a score of 29, and Sri Lanka (34) faced challenges stemming from their respective debt burdens and resulting political instability.
Global Overview:
The global average for the CPI remained stagnant at 43 for the twelfth consecutive year, with over two-thirds of countries scoring below 50. The report emphasized that many nations demonstrated little to no progress in addressing public sector corruption.
The 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index draws on perceptions of public sector corruption, utilizing data from 13 external sources, including the World Bank, World Economic Forum, private risk and consulting companies, think tanks, and others. The release of the index serves as a crucial tool for gauging progress and identifying areas for improvement in the ongoing global fight against corruption.
