In a shocking display of the North Korean regime’s strict control over its citizens, two teenagers were publicly sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for the apparent crime of watching K-pop. The sentencing took place in a large public trial captured in a video released by the South and North Development (SAND) Institute, an organization working with North Korean defectors, as reported by the BBC.
The video footage reveals a solemn scene where two 16-year-olds, clad in grey scrubs and handcuffed, are presented before an amphitheater filled with approximately 1,000 students, all wearing face masks. The students were accused of watching South Korean movies and music videos, with the narrator in the video asserting that they were “seduced by foreign culture” and had “ruined their lives.”
According to the SAND Institute, the teenagers were convicted of watching and spreading South Korean content over a period of three months. The heavy punishment meted out in this case appears to be a deliberate effort by the North Korean authorities to send a stern warning to the population against indulging in foreign cultural influences.
This is not the first instance of North Korea imposing severe sentences on its citizens for enjoying South Korean entertainment. The oppressive regime has a history of cracking down on what it perceives as subversive foreign influences that could challenge its control over the populace.
Choi Kyong-hui, the president of SAND and a defector from North Korea in 2001, provided expert insight into the situation. “Judging from the heavy punishment, it seems that this is to be shown to people across North Korea to warn them. If so, it appears this lifestyle of South Korean culture is prevalent in North Korean society,” remarked Choi Kyong-hui. She also suggested that the video was likely edited around 2022 and pointed out the challenges faced by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in trying to curb the influence of South Korean culture on the younger generations.
“I think he’s working on turning it back to the North Korean way,” Choi Kyong-hui commented, highlighting the struggle faced by the regime in maintaining ideological control over Millennials and Gen Z individuals who are adopting different perspectives.
The international community is likely to express concern over the human rights violations evident in this case, further intensifying scrutiny on North Korea’s oppressive policies. The incident underscores the lengths to which the regime will go to suppress any perceived threat to its authoritarian rule, even at the expense of the basic freedoms and rights of its citizens.
