Iran announced on Friday the successful completion of a two-day air defence drill utilizing drones designed to intercept and target hostile threats across a strategic stretch from its southwestern to southeastern coasts. This development comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region, particularly following air strikes launched by Pakistan against what it claimed were separatist militants inside Iran.
The retaliatory attack from Pakistan occurred two days after Tehran reported striking bases of another group within Pakistani territory. These tit-for-tat strikes marked a significant cross-border intrusion, raising concerns about regional stability, especially against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“Iranian forces have successfully launched a new air defence method that uses drones to intercept and target hostile targets,” stated an Iranian army spokesman, as reported by state-run Press TV. The two-day drills involved various branches of Iran’s military, including the army’s air force, navy, aerospace force, and the navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
The geographical coverage of the exercises spanned from Abadan in southwestern Khuzestan province to Chahbahar in southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Both Iran and Pakistan, despite a history of rocky relations, have indicated a desire to ease tensions following this week’s cross-border strikes.
Against the backdrop of the conflict in Gaza, Iran and its militia allies in the Middle East have been actively targeting Israeli and U.S. interests in the region, expressing support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
