In a stark warning at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan, expressed deep concern over the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict and its potential to engulf the entire Middle East region. The Saudi minister emphasized the need for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, urging international powers to employ diplomatic measures to address the security challenges posed by Houthi group attacks in the Red Sea.
“We’re incredibly concerned for regional security,” Prince Faisal stated during his address at Davos. He highlighted the impact of the conflict on freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, emphasizing the urgency of deescalation both in the Red Sea and the broader region. The Red Sea has witnessed disruptions since mid-November due to Houthi attacks, including missile and drone launches and attempts to capture vessels, purportedly in support of Hamas and Palestinians.
While the US and UK recently launched missiles at Houthi targets in Yemen to curb their assaults, the Iran-backed group pledged to escalate aggression until Israel withdraws from Gaza. This has prompted concerns about the potential for further disruptions in the Red Sea, leading countries to avoid the strategic waterway and potentially causing a rise in global freight costs.
Despite these challenges, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan made a surprising declaration, expressing Saudi Arabia’s readiness to formally recognize Israel. However, this recognition comes with a condition – Israel must take steps toward a two-state solution.
“Peace and security for Israel is intimately linked with peace and security for the Palestinians,” asserted Prince Faisal. “We agree that regional peace includes peace with Israel. But that can only happen through a Palestinian state.”
The Saudi minister’s call for a cease-fire in Gaza is fueled by the belief that Israel is not making progress in achieving its strategic objectives in the conflict. Referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that the war must continue until Hamas is destroyed, Prince Faisal expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of this approach.
“Frankly, we don’t see any real sign that any strategic objective of Israel is coming any closer. We need to have a cease-fire immediately. Continuing as we are now — continuing to see the suffering that’s happening in Gaza — is likely to lead to continuing cycles of escalation,” warned Prince Faisal Bin Farhan.
Saudi Arabia has been engaged in peace talks with the Houthi group for over a year, aiming to find a resolution to the Yemeni conflict. While none of Saudi vessels have been targeted by Houthi attacks, the growing avoidance of the Red Sea by other nations raises concerns about the potential economic repercussions if the situation continues to escalate. The diplomatic landscape in the Middle East remains complex, with regional actors grappling with the dual challenges of the Israel-Hamas war and the ongoing Yemeni conflict.
