"France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain Hold World's Most Powerful Passports in 2024; India Ranks 80th"

In the latest Henley Passport Index for 2024, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain have emerged as the countries with the world’s most powerful passports, offering visa-free entry to an impressive 194 global destinations. This marks a shift from the past five years, where Japan and Singapore consistently held the top spot. The rankings are based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Finland and Sweden, along with South Korea, share the second position, allowing passport holders access to 193 destinations. The third spot is secured by Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands, offering visa-free entry to 192 destinations.

India finds itself in the 80th spot, with citizens enjoying the privilege of traveling to 62 countries without a visa. This includes popular tourist destinations such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. India shares its current rank with Uzbekistan, while neighboring Pakistan is positioned at 101st.

Christian H Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners and the creator of the passport index, highlighted the growing disparity in global mobility among countries. Despite an overall trend toward increased travel freedom over the past two decades, the gap between the top and bottom of the index has reached an all-time high.

Mr. Kaelin noted, “The average number of destinations travelers are able to access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024.” He emphasized that the top-ranked countries now enjoy the privilege of traveling to an astonishing 166 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan, which occupies the bottom spot on the list, with access to just 28 countries without a visa. Syria, with visa-free access to only 29 destinations, holds the second-lowest position, followed by Iraq with 31 and Pakistan with 34.

The shifting dynamics in passport rankings underscore the evolving landscape of global travel, with European nations making significant strides. The Henley Passport Index serves as a valuable tool for individuals and policymakers alike, providing insights into the changing patterns of international mobility and visa regulations. As countries continue to navigate the complexities of global relations, the index remains a key reference for understanding the relative strength of passports in facilitating international travel.
