The White House faced a security breach as a vehicle forcefully collided with an outer gate of the presidential residence, resulting in the swift arrest of the driver. President Joe Biden, fortunately, remained unharmed during the incident.
The security breach unfolded on Monday evening, around 6 pm local time, drawing attention and prompting a rapid response from the Secret Service. The driver’s vehicle rammed into an exterior gate of the White House complex, confirmed the Secret Service. The driver was promptly taken into custody for further investigation into the cause and nature of the collision, as stated by Anthony Guglielmi, US Secret Service Chief of Communications.
Thankfully, President Joe Biden was not present at the White House during the incident, ensuring there was no direct threat to his safety. However, the collision led to considerable disruptions in traffic at the bustling intersection of 15th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue, adjacent to the White House.
Authorities from the Washington DC Police Department swiftly arrived at the scene, removing the suspect’s vehicle from the gate. Guglielmi reassured the public that the traffic closures were lifted within an hour of the incident, restoring normalcy to the area.
This breach of White House security follows a recent incident involving President Biden’s motorcade, where a Delaware man mistakenly crashed into the presidential convoy, resulting in charges.
The White House has been vigilant about security measures, particularly after the Capitol riot in January 2021. In response, the National Park Service reinforced the White House perimeter with a 13-foot fence to deter potential intruders from scaling it.
History marks several past breaches of White House security. In 2017, an individual scaled the fence, wandering the property for over fifteen minutes while then-President Donald Trump was inside the mansion. Similarly, in 2014, a troubled US Army veteran carrying a knife breached the premises while President Barack Obama was in office.
Despite these incidents, security protocols continue to evolve to safeguard the White House, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strict measures to protect the presidential residence from potential security threats.
