The shocking stabbing of South Korean opposition party leader Lee Jae-myung has sparked national concern, though recent updates from Seoul National University Hospital suggest he is recovering well but requires vigilant monitoring to prevent complications.
The incident occurred in the bustling city of Busan, where Lee was swarmed by journalists on Tuesday. Amidst the crowd, an individual posing as a supporter broke through and attacked him, stabbing him on the left side of his neck. Lee, swiftly transported to a local hospital in Busan, was later airlifted to Seoul for extensive surgery, lasting nearly two hours.
Dr. Min Seung-kee, the surgeon overseeing Lee’s treatment, provided updates, stating that Lee is “fortunately recovering well” after sustaining a 1.4-centimeter wound that cut through muscle tissue. The severity of the injury involved a significant portion of the internal jugular vein, with some instances of bleeding detected in his neck.
While the knife incision caused significant damage, Min emphasized the absence of harm to critical areas such as arteries, nerves, the throat, or airway, a fortunate outcome considering the potential severity of the assault.
Despite positive progress, Lee remains under close observation due to the potential for complications arising from the wound, a cautionary measure echoed by medical experts at the hospital.
The leader’s party, the Democratic Party, expressed gratitude for Lee’s survival, highlighting the critical nature of the incident, suggesting that if the assailant had struck an artery, the outcome could have been fatal.
Legal proceedings are in motion, with a court in Busan set to review an arrest warrant filed against the 66-year-old suspect, identified by the surname Kim. The warrant, sought by the prosecution on charges of attempted murder, aims to keep the suspect in custody. Reports indicate that Kim, a real estate agent in South Chungcheong province, faced financial distress, allegedly unable to pay office rent for several months.
The ongoing investigation is shedding light on potential motives behind the assailant’s actions, hinting at financial troubles as a possible contributing factor.
As South Korea grapples with the aftermath of this startling event, public attention remains focused on Lee’s recovery and the pursuit of justice as authorities continue to unravel the circumstances leading to this alarming assault.
