Renowned Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus faced a startling turn of events on Monday as he was convicted in Bangladesh for breaching the country’s labor laws. The 83-year-old economist and three colleagues from Grameen Telecom received a six-month sentence in simple imprisonment, charged with violating labor regulations. Prosecutor Khurshid Alam Khan confirmed the convictions, highlighting their immediate bail granted pending appeals.
Yunus, a revered figure globally for his groundbreaking microfinance bank that has uplifted millions from poverty, faced legal repercussions amid accusations and a contentious relationship with Bangladesh’s long-standing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina, in the past, has made acerbic comments about Yunus, accusing him of exploiting the impoverished.
The charges against Yunus and his colleagues centered on alleged negligence in establishing a workers’ welfare fund, resulting in the labor court’s decision to sentence them to six months’ simple imprisonment. Despite the conviction, all four individuals were swiftly granted bail. Outside the courtroom, a small demonstration in support of Yunus unfolded.
