Munich’s airport, a key European transportation hub, found itself at a standstill on Saturday as the relentless snowstorm prompted authorities to ground all flights. Initially scheduled until noon on Saturday, the flight cancellations were extended until 6 a.m. Sunday due to the adverse weather conditions. Similar weather-related delays and cancellations affected other airports in the region, including Zurich.
The travel turmoil extended beyond air travel. Germany’s national railway ceased train services to and from Munich’s central station, urging passengers to consider altering or delaying their journeys. Additionally, local transit in Munich, including buses and trams, was suspended, while certain subway and regional train lines faced disruptions.
The aftermath of the storm left a trail of power outages in Bavaria, with numerous households impacted by downed trees, as reported by Bayernwerk, the state’s utility company.
The storm’s impact extended to cultural and sporting events. A scheduled soccer match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin was called off due to the adverse weather conditions.
In neighboring Austria and Switzerland, authorities raised alarms about the heightened risk of avalanches following heavy snowfall. Western Austrian provinces, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg increased their avalanche warnings to the second-highest level after receiving up to 20 inches of snow overnight.
The transportation gridlock extended into the Czech Republic, where major highways were blocked for hours, train services faced disruptions, and over 15,000 households grappled with power outages. The D1 highway connecting Prague and Brno experienced a standstill after an accident, leading to a 12.4-mile line of immobilized trucks. Traffic congestion affected various other highways, with high-speed and regional trains affected due to the suspension of cross-border services from Austria and Germany.
The fallout from this intense snowstorm has not only paralyzed travel but also underscored the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions across central Europe.
