Tragedy struck near Japan as a US Osprey military aircraft crashed off the island of Yakushima, leading to the loss of one life and leaving seven US Air Force personnel missing. The Japanese coastguard reported the discovery of one unconscious person in the sea, who was later declared dead following the crash on Wednesday.
The ill-fated CV-22B Osprey, conducting a routine training exercise out of Yokota Air Base in Japan, had eight crew members on board during the incident, as confirmed by the US Air Force Special Operations Command. The cause of the crash remains unknown, with emergency responders engaged in search and rescue operations at the crash site.
Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara expressed concern over the fatal incident and promptly requested US forces in Japan to suspend Osprey flights in the aftermath of the crash. This call for suspension aims to assess the safety of Osprey aircraft and mitigate further risks, particularly in light of the recent tragedy.
The crash site, near Yakushima, saw a coordinated search effort involving Japanese coastguard patrols, aircraft, police, and local rescuers. The operation continued overnight, employing specialized sonar devices to scour the sea floor for any signs of the missing personnel or debris from the aircraft.
This unfortunate incident involving the Osprey, a tilt-rotor military aircraft that can function both as a helicopter and a fixed-wing plane, is not the first of its kind. The aircraft has experienced previous fatal crashes, sparking concerns about its safety record and prompting scrutiny of its operations.
In response to the crash, Defence Minister Kihara emphasized the urgency of information disclosure surrounding the accident, seeking swift updates and details about the circumstances leading to the crash.
As a precautionary measure, Japan’s military has halted flights of its own Osprey aircraft until safety is confirmed, echoing the concerns and anxieties of local residents in the region affected by the incident. Government spokesperson Hirokazu Matsuno expressed condolences and acknowledged the anxiety stirred among residents, underscoring the regrettable nature of the crash.
