Iceland’s Prime Minister, Katrin Jakobsdottir, reinforced the nation’s preparedness for volcanic eruptions and natural disasters amid escalating concerns about a potential eruption southwest of Reykjavik. The looming threat prompted the evacuation of around 4,000 residents of Grindavik following a series of earthquakes caused by shifting magma beneath the Earth’s surface.
The Reykjanes peninsula, previously dormant for eight centuries until 2021, has since witnessed three eruptions in remote, uninhabited areas. This recent seismic activity suggests a potential new phase of volcanic activity in the region, raising fears of prolonged displacement for affected residents.
Prime Minister Jakobsdottir emphasized Iceland’s unparalleled readiness in handling such crises. “No country is better prepared for natural disasters than Iceland,” she stated during a press conference, citing the nation’s extensive experience in managing volcanic eruptions. Jakobsdottir acknowledged the challenges of constructing defense mechanisms due to the uncertainty surrounding eruption locations.
The ongoing seismic activity in the Reykjanes peninsula has inflicted significant damage on homes and structures, leaving residents uncertain about the possibility of returning home anytime soon. Addressing these concerns, Jakobsdottir outlined the government’s priorities, emphasizing support for affected individuals, ensuring continued salaries for the next three months, and expedited arrangements for suitable housing.
Iceland, known for its 33 active volcano systems – the highest in Europe – has faced volcanic disruptions in the past.
